A separate and dedicated teaching complex, encompassing most of the space in the historic 1912 and 1937 wings, is one of the major components of the Biochemistry Phase II project. The 1912 and 1937 wings make up two rectangles, with a connector. The two rectangles, one on Henry Mall, are being gutted, remodeled, and outfitted with new windows. The connector is being demolished and replaced with space for two large modern auditoriums and some teaching lab space.
The facilities will include two large auditoriums (372 seats and 173 seats), with the larger one including a balcony with part of the seating. Both are designed to maintain an intimate connection between instructor and student, and both are set up for the convenience of instructors who may be hiking across campus to use them. An instructor prep space that includes a dedicated rest room is located on the ground floor, and will be accessible in a given semester only to faculty with scheduled classes in one of the large auditoriums.
The ground floor will house DoIT's Digital Media Center, where courses in modern bioinformatics are given.
The first floor includes several smaller meeting rooms and classrooms, offices for undergraduate and graduate training programs, and an undergraduate lounge. The lounge will be a convenient place for undergraduates to study or wait for a class. It will have available WiFI and will house integrated offices for undergraduate student organizations. The main entrances to the large auditoriums will be on this floor as well.
The second floor houses the new teaching laboratories, along with classrooms and offices to support lab courses.
