Description:
The course is designed to provide, in microcosm, the experience of
teaching an entire course. Dissertator-level PhD students will prepare
and deliver a graduate-level lecture(s) in Biochemistry 660.
Biochemistry 660 is taken by all incoming IPiB students, as well as
students in other programs. The student lecturer will cover a method with which
the student has hands-on experience, and combines theory and practice.
Students receive extensive feedback, both before and after the lecture,
from a variety of sources. The student lecturers also participate in
the design of the course, evaluation of lectures, and the design of
problem sets.
Participation is voluntary. One semester credit of 799 fulfills the equivalent of one required advanced seminar presentation, excluding the outside seminar presentation and the research progress seminar. If a student participates in 660 more than one time, the additional semesters of participation can fulfill the requirement for Continuous Seminar Enrollment, but additional semesters of 799/660 do NOT satisfy the requirement for additional advanced seminar presentations (3.3.2). Enrollment requires consent of instructor.
Meetings with Marv:
Every TA will meet with Marv roughly two weeks before their session. Occasionally, two of you will meet with Marv at the same time. At these meetings, you should:
- have a draft of your power point ready
- bring a print out of the power point, so that it can be marked up
- have an article you intend to suggest for reading (ca 5-8 pages, a “minireview” or, in some cases, primary literature):
- remember that any required reading should be relevant (and referred to) in the lecture
- try to develop a way to ensure active/cooperative learning during the class: a group problem, for example
If these times are not possible, please let me know ASAP, and we will try to set up another date.
Attending Lectures - Two Groups:
I have divided you into two groups, corresponding with sections of the course indicated in the calendar for 660. You should attend each of the lectures in your section, and be prepared to stay for as much as 45 minutes after the session to discuss the lecture with the TA. It rarely will take that long, but please allow that much time just in case.
You need only attend the lectures given by grad students or post-docs. Of course, you are welcome to attend any lecture or event in the course.
Group 1 (attend lectures through Oct 13, inclusive)
