History

The Biochemistry Departmental Library was started as a local reading room in the 1930s by Professor Harry Steenbock. Steenbock donated his own books and journals to start the library and personally provided the initial endowment to sustain the library. In the 1950s, Steenbock provided a second endowment to the library. It was at this time, in recognition of Professor Steenbock's generous donations, that the library was named the Steenbock Library of Biochemistry. A third allocation of funds provided from the Steenbock Fund contributed to the construction of the new library facility in the Biochemistry Addition. Today, the collection consists of most of the original books donated by Harry Steenbock, the department's research papers dating back to 1896, the Steenbock Symposium collection, a historical collection of books on Nutrition, Biochemistry, Enzymes, Lipids, Organic Chemistry, Proteins and Vitamins and journals deemed important by the faculty.
