For
decades, the Biochemistry department has been housed in facilities
built in four stages. In the late 1980s it became clear that the three
oldest wings, built in 1912, 1937, and 1955, could no longer support
modern research programs. Planning for a building to replace these
wings was initiated in 1991. The newest Biochemistry building,
completed in 1998, is just under 200,000 gross square feet in size and
was constructed at a total cost of $35.6 million.
The new Biochemistry building was designed to accommodate two competing
needs of a modern research department. There must be private work areas
designed to minimize interruptions to critical writing and research
activities. There must also be gathering places where scientists can
meet spontaneously and exchange ideas. |
